Al Gore’s global reality project
Matilda Lee | 22.07.11
From the man who brought us An Inconvenient Truth, four years on we now have 24 hours of reality.
This September 14th, former US Vice President, and long-time climate advocate, Al Gore is organizing a worldwide event to broadcast the reality of the climate crisis. Gore has created a multimedia presentation, which will be delivered once per hour for 24 hours in every time zone around the globe.
It will take place in 24 different time zones for 24 hours in 13 different languages. The aim is for people to ‘connect the dots’ between the many extreme weather events with the crisis in our climate. Viewers of the live streamed event, online and in person, will be invited to come together and take part in specific activities to help solve the climate crisis.
Gore is using this event, and a recent article in Rolling Stone magazine where he laid in to President Obama’s lack of action on climate change issues, to relaunch his public campaigning efforts. His NGO – the newly renamed Climate Reality Project, has millions of supporters, and will use 3,000 activists who have been personally trained by him to deliver his slide show around the world.
'We are living with the reality of the climate crisis every day. The only question is, how soon can we act?' said Gore.
'As the impacts of climate change are growing more prevalent, so is the resistance to finding the truth and implementing solutions. Just like the tobacco companies that spent decades in denial that smoking causes cancer, oil and coal companies are determined to sow denial and confusion about the science of climate change, ignore its impacts, and create apathy among our leaders,' a press release for the project said.
TAKE ACTION: What can change in a day? Everything. On September 14, the world will focus its attention on the truth about the climate crisis. For 24 hours, we will all live in reality. Pick a faraway place or a city near you. Make it yours for one day. We’re hitting every time zone — but only once. 7 p.m. in your time zone. Choose a location and get involved. RSVP and commit to watching the 24 hours of reality event.
