Camping it up: Yurts make for eco-friendly luxury camping

Interior of yurt, California

Writer Anna Shepard's recent review of 'yurt' accommodation in the UK got us thinking about the host of new travel experiences convincing holiday-makers that they can have a much greener holiday, and get very close to nature, without giving up creature comforts.

'Luxury' and 'camping' are two words that may not seems like a good fit, but when Anna puts it in yurt terms, it sounds rather irresistable:

'I was put up in Ash Field Yurt, perched at the top of a huge field with idyllic views over the Cornish countryside... inside, there were Mongolian embroideries setting the scene, a large double bed, a futon serving as another double and lots of space for a child's cot. There was also a gas hob, a well-equipped mini-kitchen and a wood-burning stove to keep us warm. The best things were the little touches - tea-light lanterns, gorgeous soft cotton sheets and a vase of flowers in the compost loo.'

With many people choosing to stay in England to holiday, the expanding yurt-style accommodations in the UK could be just the ticket. For those who like to holiday slighty further afield, there are also yurt camps in Spain, France and Portugal.

Yurts are just one small part of the mushrooming sustainable travel industry.

The advice from Green Traveller also extends to how to travel to where you are staying - how to get to many places in Europe by train for example, and how to get around once you are there, including reviews of city bike-hire schemes.
