School’s out for summer

The school summer holidays are here again. Six weeks is stretching out in front of me, and to be honest I’m really not sure how I feel about it.
I stayed in bed a little later than usual this morning, and managed a few sun salutations, some yogic breathing, and my first cup of coffee of the day (obviously not all at the same time!) all before my 12 year old daughter even surfaced.
There was no last minute scramble for school books, the lost clarinet or even a clean white shirt. That break of routine is one of the things I simply love about the summer holidays.
The flip side is how am I going to fill all the days with fun activities that will appeal to my daughter, won’t ricochet off the boredom scale, and do not include TV, DVD or Nintendo! And somehow simultaneously juggle work? (oh, and my sanity too!)
It’s not just the mortgage I have to pay, but all those endless “mama, can I just have £1, pleeeease?” By 11am today I’d already dished out £3.
Pinned to the fridge I have a list of all the things we’ve been meaning to do together over the last few months - but simply haven’t had time to. From cycling trails, to a trip up to London to the Natural History Museum, that dolphin jigsaw puzzle still unopened in the cupboard, playing tennis, and fair ground style fun at the new Weston Super Mare pier (more a nostalgic trip for me as we spent all our family holidays in Weston).
Aha, but I have one other secret weapon…with our client Halos N Horns (fun shampoos and body washes for kids) we’ve produced the Little Book of Holiday Fun. This wonderful little book is packed with ideas – fun and games that don’t cost the earth, in fact most are free – on how to entertain the kids come rain or shine.

It reminds me of so many games I used to play as a kid. From number plate and snap the car games to help end the boredom on the longest of car journeys; to skimming stones at the beach (never did get the hang of it, but my mum was a whiz) , to how to make a whistle out of a sheaf of grass – great when out on a walk.
Despite my mixed feelings I know that as 6th September approaches I’ll be wishing that the first day back to school was just a little bit further away.
Guess there’s just no pleasing some people!
