C4’s autumn documentary ‘Where the Green Movement went wrong’ is a striking example of the power of communication. It was particularly thought provoking as to the role of communication in relation to the ‘Green Movement.’

The title of the documentary was deliberately provocative and while its contents have led to some lively debates, it has been successful in reigniting wider attention to some of the challenges with which we are confronted.

The subsequent live debate addressed some of the perceptions conveyed by the program, for example the assertion that there is a lack of scientific understanding and realistic forward thinking within the environmental movement. The responses during the debate showed there to be considerable evidence to the contrary, highlighting both the need and importance of clear, concise and well-informed communication strategies surrounding these issues.

Climate change has become an increasingly emotional topic. This particularly harsh winter, the coldest in recent memory, has further fuelled scepticism about climate change and has led to even more confusion and uncertainty.

Smart, thorough and well-informed communications strategies have an absolutely crucial role. Not only to accurately and successfully convey these issues, but also directly tackle them to move forward towards long-term solutions. The power of communication is in the use.
